Back on the winning groove with a win in Mayfield
June 01, 2026
Killavullen journeyed to Mayfield on Sunday last, to take on the home team, in the latest game of the Ref FM Cork County Hurling league, Division 6. The game was played in Mayfield’s second pitch, and this is and was an impressive pitch, with a great playing surface. Great facilities in Mayfield, for which the host club can be very proud.
Mayfield opening the scoring in the second minute, from open play and we equalised in the fifth minute, from a converted 65 metre shot from Jamie Magner. We took the lead from Darragh O Grady in the seventh minute who played in the game, when we were short several players despite having a bothersome sore foot. It may have curtailed his movement but not his determination, and in this case, his accuracy. Mayfield for whom their centre back was very impressive equalised from a free in the 9th minute and took the lead with two more converted frees before Owen Magner from open play and his brother Jamie from a free, equalised for us by the 18th minute. Mayfield were good though in this period, and forged ahead again, with another point from open play, and we were getting little change from their half back line in particular, with their centre back, as the fulcrum. They went a further point up in the 21st minute from another free. Jamie clawed another score back, after an impressive intervention in the defence from Kian Lane, and Seamus Fox was fouled in and around midfield. Mayfield again went two points ahead from a converted free, from long range but our Leaving Certificate student, in Niall Feaheny scored a great point from long range to reduce the deficit. The last score of a lively entertaining game, came in the 28th minute from Mayfield again, to have the scoreline at the break, 0-08 to 0-06 in favour of Mayfield. Both teams were guilty of a number of wides in that period, 6 playing five, with that count in favour of Killavullen.
We sprung Colm O Mahony from the bench, and he just returning from an injury, indeed on the line were several players that hope to be on the championship starting fifteen but that is the lot of a dual club, with a lot of playing commitments leading to injuries. Mayfield brought their tally to nine points, after another free. But Jamie got that score back with a fine point from midfield. Mayfield took their tally of points into double digits in the 3rd minute of the half and quickly sent another point ahead, shortly thereafter. Colm O Mahony had gone straight in on their influential centre back to try to score but as much to curb his dominance and he scored a great point for us, in the seventh minute of the half. We were right back in the game, when a forging run down the centre of the attack zone by Jamie drew men to him, and he offloaded cleverly to Colm Lonney who finished to the net, from close range. We took the lead, a lead that seemed improbable in the opening half, from another free from Jamie in the 13th minute. We stretched out that lead further with a long-range point, again from Jamie, from a dead ball situation in the 17th minute to put us up by two points. Pa Angland, after impressing in the Div 4 game on Thursday night, came on for Darragh who had given his all. It meant a rejigging of the defence, but Niall Feaheny was very comfortable in his new role in midfield. We scored another goal, from Owen Magner this time, after a raking, drilled pass from his defence berth from Seamus Fox found Owen in space, and he finished low and accurately to the corner of the net. Mikey O Connor scored the next score to push our lead to six point but Mayfield responded impressively with points in the 23rd and 24th minutes to significantly cut the deficit. Conor Griffin replaced Sean Palmer as we tried to set out the game, and he was effective in curtailing the quick transition from the Mayfield rear guard. They bombed several high balls in on our defence but Ronan, Fionn and Kian in our full back unit, were imperious on the day, and never did a Mayfield forward threaten our goal line. Mayfield did get the lead down to three points with a long range converted free, but we got the final score in the game, from the stick of Colm O Mahony after Liam Cronin caught a great ball in a crowd, and he off loaded to Niall Feaheny, who set up Jamie for an accurate cross field pass, that had Colm in splendid isolation, from which he duly scored.

The great thing about these county leagues is that you are playing different teams, in different venues, and encountering different referees. All that change is beneficial to the team, as there are no previous grudges to settle and in the referee on Sunday last, he was very calm, assured and excellent throughout. His competence and the attitude of all the players only added to a fine game.
