Another win, played out in near darkness in Killavullen
May 01, 2026
Killavullen defeated Erin’s Own in the latest instalment of the ultra – competitive Red FM Cork County Div 6 league, played on Thursday night, in a damp, night in Killavullen, when the play finished up, in quite dark conditions, with a heavy shower forthcoming.
Killavullen open brightly, and had the first score of the game, from Padraig Looney, quickly followed by a converted free, scored by Jamie Magner. We raised the first green flag of the night, and only two minutes after elapsing when Ronan Barry allowed a centre from Owen Magner run across him, and he then turned sharply, and finished coolly to the night. Jamie added another free, before Erin’s Own got a point back in the 4th minute, and followed up quickly with another point. Liam Cronin, very commanding on the night, from his centre back berth, bisected the posts from distance to score a great point, before Jamie added a similar effort, from in and around midfield with seven minutes having elapsed. The team from Glounthaune though had two many good hurlers, on the field to be brushed aside easily, and they scored a good goal of their own in the 11th minute, that gave the deputising Sean in our goals, no chance. We responded impressively though, and reeled off three points in a row, from 3 different scorers, in Jamie again, Eddie Cotter and Mikey O Connor. Erin’s Own responded with a converted free, and two players, including our own Owen Magner had to leave the field following an accidental collision. Padraig Looney was drifting into good pockets of space and scored another point, after being found by Darragh O Grady in space. The East Cork side responded with two points, before Niall Feaheny capped another stellar game, with a long range point from right out on the tram lines, on the Blackwater side of the field, and then Padraig Looney raised another green flag with a fine team goal. That was cancelled out in the next play of the game, when we got mugged in possession, high up the field, and Erin’s Own ruthlessly extracted maximum pay out, with a quick Panzer style movement down the field, to finish well to the net. Another free, had the margin down to four points, but Jamie again quelled that mini uprising, with a point from play, and then from a free, and play again, before Erin’s Own scored a point, just before the break., leaving the score 2-13 to 2-07 in our favour.
The interlude was short, as light, on a wet dreary night, was sub-optimum, even to the point of the referee asking patrons, sheltering form the rain, in their cars and jeeps on the bank, yet still watching the match, to turn off their headlights, of their cars as it was distracting and blinding the players. Erin’s Own got the opening score of the half, before Ronan scored another goal in a similar manner to the first, using his size to out-muscle the full back but the finish was excellent, no big drama’s, no bulging nets, just a deft flick into the net. Jamie scored another point, from a free, and Brian Cotter cleared a concise clearance to Niall Feheny, who finished, like he did in the opening half, with a great point from distance. Padraig Looney scored another goal, and we somehow managed to leave another one behind us, with the ball virtually on the line, before Erin’s Own responded with converted free. The patched-up Owen Magner, scored a point from an acute angle and from there to the end of the game, the two teams traded point for point, with our scores coming from Jamie and Mikey, to leave the score at the end of a very sporting game, 4-18 to 3-11
Good tight sporting game that the referee in Michael Sheehan played played a big part in
