All Square in blustery conditions, against Grange
March 18, 2026
In the first adult game played in Killavullen in 2026, Killavullen welcomed Grange to Killavullen, and played out an entertaining draw, on Pitch 2, with its new Red and White netting on Sunday last.
Seamus O Mahony opening the scoring for us, in the blustery conditions with a nice point, but Grange took the lead in fortunate circumstances when a long ball from a free, carried in the wind, and just crept under the cross bar for a goal. Grange added a close in free in the next score, but we battled back well, into the game, helped by determined play from Joe Cagney and Niall Carroll in our full back line, and Seamus Fox, Sean O Shea and Conor Griffin in the half line. That, despite playing against the wind, gave Niall Feaheny and Colm O Mahony a good platform for midfield, and after a nice exchange of hand passes in the forward line, we shimmed the ball across the half forward line, which allowed Colm come through the centre, unchallenged and he scored a great goal. Seamus added a close in free, and we had regained the lead.
Grange retaliated though in fine style aided by determined play from their centre back, who was very good throughout the game. Their Corner forward scored a nice point, and only a great block down from Sean O Shea prevented a goal, but Grange regrouped and tacked over a point. With the aid of the strong wind, they added two more scores, before Colm O Mahony added a point in reply. Grange added to their lead with another point, and then, we got the final score of an entertaining half, from Seamus from another free. 1-06 to 1-04 was the score in favour of Grange at the break.
Killavullen introduced Cian O Connor and David Walsh at the interval and almost from the throw in, Cian worked the ball to Colm O Mahoney who scored a fine point. We had neutralised the deficit by the 5th minute of the half with another point from Colm, and too the lead in the 8th minute, when Seamus O Mahony scored a close in free, after Kian Lane was fouled. Conor Griffin scored a brilliant goal to push out our lead, after he jinked and waved his way forward from centre back, utilising the man on his shoulder each time, and after a neat exchange of the final pass with Colm Hayes, Conor finished expertly to the net. Seamus added another free to extend the lead to five points, but it galvanised Grange into a response. They scored a point from a free, and then from open play, before Gavin Dawson, from that club hit a monster of a free, from the ground, from way outside the arc, to gain a two-point score. Seamus scored a free in response, but Grange scored a free of their own. In tough conditions, during a squally shower, the pitch became very greasy, and people were losing their footing easily. Seamus pushed our lead back out to two points again, with a free, that just crept inside the post, but Grange equalised with another monster free another two pointer from Gavin to square the scoring, and the game finished 2-10 to 1-13
