Killavullen win thriller against a strong Sars side.
March 09, 2026
Killavullen and Sarsfields gave us a very competitive and high scoring game on Saturday in Teddy McCarthy Park, in Glanmire. The Sars pitch was in spick and span conditions even after a senior match the night before giving the two teams chances to show their quality.
Sarsfields took an early lead going up 3 points after 6 minutes, Jamie Magner gave Killavullen their first score from a placed ball, Killavullen then began to settle with Brian and Eddie Cotter hurling very well in defence. Sars conceded possession rather easily in the back giving away the ball and Owen Magner was there to slap the ball, into the top corner from 6 yards out to give Killavullen the lead for the first time in the game. Sars number 4 levelled the scores, but our forwards were starting to make inroads into the Sarsfields defence with Mikey O Connor and Colm o Mahony causing trouble. Soon afterwards, Colm Looney was dragged down for a penalty to Killavullen, and clinical as you like, Jamie Magner slotted home the penalty giving the keeper no chance. Cian McCarthy, former Cork player was showing off his skills, and he amply demonstrated this by cutting a sideline beautifully over the bar. Scores kept coming in from both sides including 2 Jamie Magner frees and a well caught ball from Colm Looney who then batted it over the bar. After an action-packed half, the whistle blew giving Killavullen a narrow lead at 2-06 to 0-11.
Jamie Magner got the first 2 points of the second half from placed balls, but not long afterwards, Sars got their only goal of the game scored by Cian McCarthy after a nice bit of play from the home side. This brought the sides level again before Killavullen rallied with 3 points in a row to give a bit of breathing space. Killavullen extended the lead to 6 points after a long ball into the square was shepherded down by Colm Looney and eventually was pushed on and bundled forward and ended up in the back of the net. Daragh O Grady was introduced for Sean Palmer to try and put the game to bed, Scores came back and forth for both teams including an unbelievable long-range score from Sars centre back Jack Leahy who was brilliant all day. Niall Feaheny had a breathtaking run from one side of the pitch to other and was eventually fouled setting up a nice free in front of the posts. Goal chances at the end for Sars were missed and the two Magner brothers capitalised, both adding another point to their names, finishing the scoring at 3-17 to 1-17 in Killavullen’s favour.
An unbelievable win for the club and the team, the boys will look on now to face Argideen Rangers in 2 weeks’ time in Killavullen.
