Glanworth win the opening league game in Avondhu in 2026

February 21, 2026

Glanworth, the home team were to win the opening game in Avondhu in 2026 against us, earlier today in Glanworth, the opening game of the Avondhu Div 3 football league, or any league for that matter. A deceptive wind, blowing straight down the middle of the field was influential as the team with that advantage outscored the opposition, in both halves.

We started brightly but carried the ball, too often into contact and lost possession. Glanworth had the vastly experienced Mickey Sheehan in their inside forward line, and he was a potent thread throughout. Glanworth opened the scoring from a close in free, and Mikey had the next point from open play. Glanworth then took a decisive hold of the game with a goal, and though we had oodles of possession, we had nothing to show for it. We lost our new import, Finn Killion, to a nasty facial injury after only 14 minutes and he was replaced by David Walsh. We were grateful to have Dr. Tommy Carroll on the line, to deal with the injury. Glanworth tacked on another point, and then got another goal, followed by a 2 point score, and the final point of the half also went to the men, wearing the green jerseys. At the break, the score was 2-06 to 0-00 which was a tad harsh on our efforts.

With the aid of the strong wind in the second period, we were much more competitive with Joe Cagney, Conor Griffin, Kian Lan, Conor Barrett, Niall Feaheny and Colm Hayes to the fore. We got our opening score from Kian, after a nice move, and Kian added a two pointer. Ian O Mahony tacked over a close in free, and Kian got another point for us. Glanworth got a solitary point in reply, but they had that commanding lead to hold onto. Niall Feaheny kicked another two-point score, and that was the end of the scoring. A nice opening game, loads of spirit shown, and loads for Ian and the backroom team, to think about for the next game.

Glanworth are to be commended on the state of their pitch, in fantastic order, with the new auto-mover, working the oracle. Added to the impressive facilities is a new futuristic and trendy score board, very flash, that illuminates when a goal is scored, and finally, both teams were served up fresh sandwiches and teas / coffees at the end of the game, though a lot of people were scurrying off to see the rugby game.

Well done to Glanworth on these initiatives, and the new ball stop fencing in Cashman’s field.

Kudos all round
