George Lane – A lifetime of Dedication to Killavullen GAA
October 04, 2025
The death occurred on Wednesday of this week, of George Lane, from Grandy, in our parish. George first came to the recognition of the general public in that very good U14 team of 1954, but George always was invested in our club and remained so to the very end.
His work with the department of Agriculture took him up and down every by-road of the county and in farming people, he found a kindred spirit. He was a brilliant conversationist, a great listener and a fine raconteur, able to spin amusing tales from everyday life.
He was our juvenile chairman for 5 years, and any team that George was involved with, he gave them unbridled attention and never was anyone left behind on the side of the roads, even if that meant the car was bursting at the seams. He was brilliant at cajoling players to give the best version of themselves, and any criticism of them, from anyone got a sharp rebuke. Those teams, in the early 1990’s regularly hoovered up silverware, and culminated in winning a Minor hurling title in 1994.
As a juvenile chairman, he was brilliant, a huge work ethic propelled the club forward, and he took over the reins, of being the Adult club chairman in 1991 and he served three years in that role.
George’s great gift to the club though was the amount of money he raised and brought in for the purchasing and development of the Mill Field. He was passionate about the cause, and his fondness for Killavullen was infectious, and he garnered up money, from far and wide.
George was always enquiring about how the lads below were doing, what teams were showing promise, who was playing well, any injuries, and when his own children, John and Tom, stopped playing, his interest did not wane, and sustained him until his grandchildren came along.
We will miss George, his personality endeared him to many and a lot more people knew of Killavullen though the positive tales and exploits and travelling of George Lane.
Rest Well George -
