Killavullen won out, in a game cut short by a serious injury

August 29, 2025

Last night in Castletownroche, with the new score board working brightly on a cold and dreary night, Killavullen was to win out against Glanworth, in a game blown up early when a Glanworth player was injured, necessitating the summons of an ambulance.

Glanworth had the lions share of possession in the early stages of the game but were repelled by our defenders with our half back line of Padraig Cronin, Billy Norris and Cian O Connor excelling, aiding and abetted by intelligent play from our young midfield partnership of Seamus Fox and Niall Feaheny. We got the opening score of the game from Ian O Mahony from a free, after Kian Lane was fouled. Our second score came from a decent free kick conversation from Ian again, and we tacked over the opening score, from open play, courtesy of Darragh O Grady, who was prominent throughout the game, from his centre forward berth. Seamus Fox was adept at positioning himself in scoring positions between the lines, and he scored a great point after receiving a clever pass, from Niall, through Seamus Cronin This was the 11th minute of the game, and he repeated the feat in the next minute to bring our tally to 0-05.

We got the opening goal of the game, when Niall went on a surging run, and worked his way in, close in on goals. His shot was parried by the Glanworth goalkeeper, but the rebound fell invitingly into the arms of Colm Looney, and he finished the ball to the net. Seamus repeated his scoring prowess after Cian O Connor was prominent in the build up and generally, with good width on the pitch, effected by Seamus and Kian in the half forward line, and Cathal and Ian in the full line, we had space to move the ball about. Seamus scored again, before Glanworth got their opening score of the game, and it was a major, to leave the score at 1-07 to 1-00 after 25 minutes. Billy Norris had to withdraw from the field, but he was replaced by the vastly experienced John O Regan, after a vigorous warm up (not). We regrouped and importantly scored the next point, from lovely interlink play, finished over the bar by Darragh. Our final score was a tad fortuitous when a high kick from Ian dropped short, but Cian, was following the flight of the ball acutely, and he gathered it, in close to goals, and finished docilely to the net.

Glanworth got the opening point of the second period, and that was a close in goal, that gave Dominic in our goal-line no chance. However, the youthful full back line of David, Barry and Sean snuffed out any remaining attacks and we were to get our opening score of the half, from Ian from a free, from distance, that curled delightfully over the bar, from an acute angle. The next score of the game, was when Seamus Cronin, very influential of the night, went on a mazy run, and finished emphatically to the net, what was great about the goal, was the sustained period of time that Killavullen held the ball, and shuffled it back and forth across the pitch to isolate persons in space, and ultimately Seamus. Ian O Mahony added two further points from free’s and then a close in free, quickly taken by Colm Looney that just narrowly zipped over the bar.

Well in command, and with 12 minutes to go, the game was halted by the experienced referee in Aidan Hyland, after a Glanworth player hit his head off the rock hard ground. Feeling dizzy and nauseous, an ambulance had to be called, and both sets of players left the field, under a cloud, for what had been a very sporting game. Thankfully, after spending a night in hospital, he was discharged early the next morning.

The score at the end was 3-12 to 2-01.

Good campaign by Killavullen and if the purpose of the competition is to get game time and experience into young players, then it more than justified entering the fray as we played three games and only came a cropper to Ballyclough in the opening game, by two points.

Well done to Colin, Brian, Kevin and Ian Roche in particular for managing the team, and finding players for each game, despite a multitude of others challenges and injuries, and thanks to those who delayed the journey to Electric Picnic, to play the game. Very much appreciated.
