Good win in Junior B encounter with LC Gaels

August 24, 2025

A nice blend of youth, experience and some class took to the field, on a superb Ballyclough surface, who happen to also host the Senior A football championship meeting between Kanturk and Kilshannig. Conditions on this Saturday evening were dry with a slight breeze favouring Killavullen in the first half. Colm Maher was the man in the middle, for our round 2 Junior B football championship match up against Liscarroll Churchtown Gaels

Killavullen started the game brightly, Eoghan Buckley and Seamus Fox were stamping their authority in the middle of the field, which launched our first score of the game finished by Mark Nagle. Soon after Mark followed up with another score following a lung bursting run from Podge Cronin. LC Gaels opened their account with a point, which could have been worse had it not been for the brave defending of Barry Cotter stopping the ball on the line. Our next two scores were well worked with Ian O Mahony and Colm Looney of our inside forward line winning primary position and feeding the oncoming Mark and Podge to kick scores, from here LC Gaels scored the next 3 points of the game, including a long range 2 pointer to tie the game at 0-4 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. We retook the lead again following a turnover by Billy Norris, who was outstanding throughout holding the middle fed Cian O Connor who, rarely kicks the ball found Colm Looney who burned his man and pointed.  We then traded frees to leave the score 0-6 to 0-5 at the half time interval.

We started the second half just how we finished the first. David Walsh who was influential all night, dragged a few defenders before offloading to Seamus Fox who was running deep from midfield to point. We followed up soon after following good work from Niall Carroll with a Darragh O’Grady effort to leave us 3 clear with 10 minutes gone in the second half. However, we hit a wobble. LC Gaels clawed back 2 points before being awarded a penalty which was dispatched past a helpless Dominic Bolster, who was in between the sticks for the first time. Dominic commanded very well and aided the teak tough full back line of Jack Martin, Joe Cagney and Barry Cotter. Now down 2 points with 15 to go, we introduced Seamus Cronin for Niall Carroll for fresh energy. We got the rewards for this immediately, with Seamus going on a long run before setting up Mark who goaled. With 10 minutes to go we introduced Cathal Moran, who recently moved to the parish for his debut, the Galway native impressed immediately and played a big part in our second goal with a classy hand pass. The goal came about from a cannon of a Mark Nagle shot that was brilliantly saved, David Walsh was the fastest to react to ice the game for us, from the resulting kickout came the full-time whistle and we won on a score line of 2-10 to 1-9

Overall, a very encouraging performance. Work ethic, decision making and the commitment of players will have impressed management. Furthermore, it was important to build on the momentum gathered from the Junior A game on Friday, and with this performance there will be a few players to consider for the first team. Attention now turns to our final group game against Glanworth on this Thursday 28th August where a win has us in contention to get out the group
