High scoring win to send us top of the league -Div 4 hurling

May 03, 2025

Killavullen powered their way to the summit of the Avondhu Division 4 hurling league with a strong second half display against Buttevant, played in Buttevant earlier today, on a pitch that you could admire all day long. The capable referee was Adrian O Connor

Kian Lane opened the scoring for us, with a point, but we were rocked back on our haunches soon afterwards when Buttevant scored a goal, with their opening attack. They tacked on another point before Sean Palmer added a point for us, and then Buttevant added another point from a free. Joe Cagney, Sean’s partner in crime in midfield, scored a delightful point for us, from out on the wing but Buttevant, with the aid of the breeze, were a goal in front again, when they scored the next point. Sean Woulfe scored a long-range point from a free, that he had won himself before Colm Hannon finished to the net emphatically after a great run through the middle by Sean Palmer, drew the man and isolated Colm. Colm then added a smart point and the new make-shift full forward in Cian O Connor scored a point and then Sean Palmer again to have Killavullen in the lead by 1-07 to 1-03 after 15 minutes.

Conor O Brien was very effective for Buttevant as well as Kyle Bowles in their inside forward line, and Buttevant got two points back from those sources. Sean Palmer was buzzing a round the field though, and Joe Cagney, gathered a great pass from Barry Cotter and when Joe delayed his pass until Sean ran into the channel, a great team goal resulted Again Buttevant replied with two more scores, the later a free before Mike Walsh scored a fine point, and Colm Hannon forced a great save from the Buttevant net stopper after he, Colm was found in space by a dinky cross field pass from Cian. Sean Woulfe, by two and Colm Hannon added further points to our tally to leave the score at the break 2-11 to 1-07 in our favour.

On the restart, Sean Woulfe finished right into the corner from a searing, racking pass from Seamus O Mahony who at times, was very clever in our centre back berth, with his general pass and especially the distribution. Mike Walsh added another point before Kyle Bowles got one back for Buttevant. Colm Hannon scored another goal after a clever pass from Padraig Cronin to Ian O Mahony and the pass from Ian to his better place colleague found Colm in way too much space, and he capitalised. That was the que for a raft of Killavullen changes from there to the end of the game, and it was refreshing to have both Kevin and Seamus Fox back amongst us, after several years in Australia. Better still that they showed up competitive, fit, and eager, and with places to be won on the Junior A team, bringing on substitutes into this Division 4 team, does not weaken it, one bit. Competition for places in that keen. Buttevant stayed in the game with another point, before Sean Palmer and Sean Woulfe added to their haul with more scores. Buttevant got another point before Joe Cagney got the next point, and Darragh in our goals brought off a good save. Mike Walsh, and the birthday boy, Niall Feaheny scored two goals with accomplished finishes to put a gloss on the scoreline. Buttevant added another goal, before Seamus Fox found the net, that he had threatened to do, immediately after his introduction, to bring the final score of the game to 7-15 to 2-10.

The best aspect about this game was the confidence in the Killavullen players to play intricate passes around the field, confident of where the space was, and the close control of the Killavullen players, that allowed them time to control the ball, and effect good decisions. A nice overall balanced team, that is coming along nice and great to get some injured players back into the mix again, as well as the returning emigrants.
