Four Goal salvo from Colm Looney, keeps us in the game

April 10, 2025

Killavullen made the trek down to Dromina on Tuesday night last, and were warmly received by our hosts, off the field, but very competitive on it, in the latest game in Division 4 Avondhu hurling league. Dromina had an experienced team down the middle of their unit, and young lively players on the flanks which made them strong.

Dromina raced into a four-point lead, all from dead ball situations, two from 65 metre shots and two more from frees before we got our opening score from Sean Woulfe, from open play.  We had loads of possession, but harried on the ball, our shot selections were poor, and we went further behind with three more points from Dromina, the pick of which was scored by a Brian Murray, who cut in impressively from his half forward wing position. Dromina added another point, before the young but very impressive Niall Feaheny got a point back for us, from out on the wing. Dromina added two more but then, we got two close in scores in a row, one a free, hard earned, scored by Colm Hannon, and then another from play from Niall. Dromina tacked on another point, against our mis-firing team, but then, a long delivery from Mike Walsh was grasped from the air by Colm Looney and he nearly burst the net to bring us, right back into the game.

The score at the break was 0-11 to 1-04. Some rejigging of the team was necessary, and Conor Brennan was introduced. Dromina, with their age and experience and craft were getting free’s more frequently and easier and tacked on another point, from a dead ball situation. Sean Woulfe arrowed another point over the bar for us, and then Colm, much like the opening goal, fetched a high delivery, and raised a green flag, and we, despite not playing particularly well, in key areas, were right back in the game. Colm Hannon drew us level with another point from a free, only for Dromina to race into a two-point lead again, with two more points, one a free, the other from open play. Dromina had a side line ball back near their goals, far side of the field, and the Dromina Full back, meant to pass it across the field to his advancing goalkeeper, but left it short. Colm was alive to the situation, picked up the ball, and spun his shot over the out of position goalkeeper, and into the empty net. Great improvised goal.

Dromina equalised in what was now a great game of hurling, with every ball keenly contested. Colm Hayes and Seamus Cronin came on and got stuck in, from their introductions. Colm Hannon again pushed us up a point,  from a free, but Dromina again fought back and scored two more from play, in a wide-open game now. Colm got two more free’s and under pressure, slotted them over the bar. But Dromina got in for a goal, when the full forward used all of his experience to fend off Cian in our last line of defence and scored past Darragh. They added a point from a free, to leave us in arrears by 3 points, with time almost up.  We got a 21-yard free, and despite five brave Dromina souls being on the goal line, Colm stepped up, and with a hefty shot, billowed the net. Without the net, the ball would have been found, about five miles away in Newtownshandrum.  Drawn game, one last chance to win it, but Niall Feaheny, though, it looked like, he was fouled, nothing was given, and both teams had to be content with a point.

Good sporting game throughout and a great run out for all involved, who would like to advance to the number one teams, for both clubs.
