Back to winning ways in Division 1 Hurling League

April 21, 2024

Killavullen got back to winning ways, in the Division 1 encounter between Glanworth and Killavullen, played in Killavullen on Saturday evening, in an effort to avoid the Cork games, on over the weekend.  Both teams were short some regulars, and Killavullen lost two more players to hamstring injuries in the course of the game, but the Glanworth loss was acute, with Stevie Condon, not able to play.

Jamie Magner opened with a free for us, in the 4th minute, but Podge Condon replied for Glanworth, similarly from a free. Jamie scored another after Eddie Cotter was fouled, and then, Jamie caught a great ball, in near the goals, and though initially thwarted, he managed to wriggle free, and score a point, with his back to the goals, clever improvisation. Glanworth got another point from a free, and Jamie replied with another dead ball situation. Glanworth then worked the spaces well, and scored two quick fire points. Liam Fox scored a racking point from midfield in the 15th minute to leave us in the lead 0-05 to 0-04 at that juncture. We had lost two players to injuries at that stage, with Colm O Mahony and Padraig Looney, replacing Eoghan Buckley and Jack O Connor.  A side line ball on the 40, taken by Padraig Looney, ran all the way through into his brother Colm, and though very closely marked, Colm broke free, of the shackles on him, and kicked the sliotar to the net. The Killavullen team saw numerous changes in position, and Eddie Cotter, now operating out the field, scored a nice point from distance, and repeated the same, some moments later. Mickey O Connor was underneath some great fetches from the air, and he duly got on the scoreboard with a nice catch and score. Glanworth got a point back, from open play  before Jamie scored another free for us, to bring the first half proceedings to a close, on a score of 1-09 to 0-05.

Owen Magner was introduced at the break for Colm Looney. We got our second half scoring underway with a huge free from distance from Colm O Mahony and then, Owen, who got on a good share on ball, scored a lovely point from the wing. Jamie added a free and Kian Lane a point from play, followed shortly thereafter by Liam Fox, and then Jamie again from a free. Glanworth replied with a point from distance, and Colin Carey came onto the field. Glanworth scored two points in a row, from open play, but Jamie replied with another free. Glanworth got another, from a dead ball situation, but Padraig Looney cancelled out that score, with a great long-range point. Glanworth got their tenth and final point from play. Charlie in our goals, brought off a good save, and our full back line cleared the sliotar comprehensively, a line which were good on the day.  We were not finished yet,  with the scoring and Jamie  initially, and then a great team score, finished by Colin Carey, after the play was switched quite brilliantly, by Liam Cronin added to our tally. Right on the stroke of the final whistle, Colm O Mahony landed another long range free, to finish our scoring and garnish two points, for us.
