Strong 2nd Half Sees Us Overcome A 4 Point Half Time Deficit

May 05, 2019

1-22 to 1-18 5th May 2019 Vs. Glanworth

A strong 2nd half performance, and increased work ethic saw Killavullen turn a 4 point half time deficit into a 4 point winning margin in the latest installment of the Avondhu Division 1 Hurling league game, played in splendid sunshine in Glanworth this morning, May 5th.

Glanworth were first to score before Liam Cronin equalised from a free for us, in the 2nd minute. Padraig Looney scored a fine point on the run to go ahead before Glanworth best player, Stevie Condon, who was unerring from placed balls and free play during the game brought parity in the 4th minute. Barry Murphy put us ahead again but Glanworth retaliated with two points to go one up. Paul O Sullivan had both teams on 4 points in the 11th minute. Glanworth scored another free only for Liam Cronin to equalise and the lead flipped again with another point from Glanworth. Padraic scored another fine score , again on the run and we were ahead again when Barry scored a point from a free. Glanworth then took over the scoring completely in the next 7 minutes aided by some wayward clearances from our defence which were under considerable pressure. By the 23rd minute, Glanworth had forged a fine lead for themselves, 0-13 to 0-07, with their architect in chief being that Mr. Condon. Paul O Sullivan arrested the slide in the 25th minute after Fionn Magner broke down a Glanworth attack and Padraig scored again in the same minute to further eke into their lead. Liam Cronin added to our momentum in the 27th minute from a free before Glanworth got the next two points to push the lead out to 5 points again. On the stroke of half time, Barry reduced the arrears to four points with a fine point from a difficult angle.

We set off immediately on the resumption chasing the arrears, and Barry Murphy converted two close in free’s in the first two minutes before Seamus Fox chipped a nice point from a crowded situation over the bar, by using the short grip on the hurley well. We gained parity in excellent fashion when Padraig Looney again evaded his marker, and scored a delightful point.

The next score was a telling one, when we failed to deal with a long delivery into our small parallelogram was not cleared and the ball was finished to the net. Murphy scored another free when the Glanworth defender fouled Padraig and was lucky to only receive a yellow card but overall, in a fine sporting and open game, perhaps a red card would have been harsh. To emphasis his well being, Padraig got the next point. We gained the lead again, when a free from Liam Cronin was dropping short and Ian O Gorman finished it to the net, in spectacular fashion. We were on top now in a lot of areas of the pitch and our forwards were received good quality deliveries into them, and they profited as a result. Barry scored another pointed free, only for Glanworth to reply with a similar score.

Seamus Fox got this second point of the game in the 19th minute of the half, and Liam converted a 65 metre free to push our lead out to 4 points, 1-20 to 1-16. Glanworth tried valiantly for a goal but the full back line of Billy Norris, Fionn Magner and especially Kevin Fox were in resilient form, and there was to be no way through. Glanworth scored in the 25th minute but Padraig matched that score 2 minutes later. We got our final score from Liam Cronin with a minute to go, Glanworth got one back but never got in for the goal that they craved.

A good overall team display and a fine win, and with strong competition for places on the forthcoming championship, the selectors would have been well pleased.
