Winning Start And Pleasing Debuts

February 10, 2019

1-11 to 0-10 10th February 2019 Vs. Fermoy

On Sunday last, in a bitterly cold Fermoy, Killavullen were victorious in the opening round of the Division 1 football league. Killavullen had a large panel, and utilised it to the maximum, and with a number of promising debuts, it was a very encouraging start.

We had the considerable advantage of a strong wind at our backs for the opening half, and started the scoring with two Liam Cronin frees. We got a fortuitous goal of our own when a Liam Cronin free kick eluded everyone that had amassed on the edge of the square and finished up in the net. We tacked on some nice points from Charlie Lillis and Paul O Sullivan after a neat exchange with Padraig Looney who played intelligently at the edge of the square. Out the field, Sean O Regan and Eddie Cotter worked well in midfield and our half forward line got a good supply of possession.

Fermoy possibly should have got two goals in the opening quarter but you would also have to credit our defenders who got in a last minute tackle to put pressure on the kicker. Fermoy opened their account from a free before Liam Cronin scored from open play, and we finished the half strongly with nice points from Padraig, and then a brace from Charlie

A feature of the 1st period was on counter attacks in which Evan O Connor, breaking from defence was very clever, and gave an extra man when we attacked down that flank.

We lead at the interval by 1-08 to 0-01.

On the resumption Liam scored another point, and then Eddie Cotter scored a lovely point, and Ian O Gorman made some telling forays. Fermoy rallied with the aid of the wind but could not break down our defence, in which Patrick Angland, Kevin Fox and Billy Norris were considerable. Pa Sheahan and John O Regan were teak tough in the challenges and Fionn Magner on his debut came out with the ball on several occasions.

Fermoy tacked on several points to bring their tally to 0-09 before we scored again from a free. We withstood the onslaught from Fermoy and Charlie Lillis and Liam Cronin proved to be very good outlets for the defence. Cian was not troubled in that 2nd period, which speaks volumes for the players in front of him.

Fermoy scored once more in the 29th minute of the game from a free and that was the final score of a game in which both teams will be anxious to be more clinical in front of goals. The final score was 1-11 to 0-10.
