A Plethora Of Second Half Wides Leads To Our Demise

April 23, 2019

1-09 to 1-10 23rd April 2019 Vs. Buttevant

Last night in Castletownroche, Buttevant and Killavullen served up a rip-roaring U21 B Grade Football championship final that Buttevant edged out by a solitary point on a final score of 1-10 to 1-09. Killavullen, in truth left this game behind them with a plethora of wides (10) in the second half when they were the dominant team.

The most influential forward on the pitch, Ryan Fowley from Buttevant, opening their scoring in the 4th minute but Killavullen answered that quickly with a point from Eddie Cotter in the 5th minute. Buttevant scored again in the 7th minute, and added to their tally a minute later before opening up a 3 point lead with a converted free in the 10th minute. We were struggling at this stage of the game but Michael Fresh converted a free for us in the 15th minute to register our second point. The elusive and quick of mind and feet, Fowley scored again in the 18th minute before Jack O Connor scored a point from a free in the 21st minute. Darragh O Grady, who had been sprung from the bench, kicked a lovely point in the 22nd minute and we were on parity when Padraig Looney equalised for us a minute later.

The 24th minute of the 1st half was very dramatic, first, Buttevant scored a good goal when that man Fowley again evaded his marker and fired a decent shot to the net, but Killavullen responded with a goal of their own in the same minute when Colm Looney got inside their rear guard, and blew the ribbings from the net. That was how it concluded at the interval, 1-05 apiece.

After the changeover Jack O Connor scored a point for us in the 1st minute of the half, before Buttevant equalised in the 2nd minute and took the lead in the 4th. A determined run from Darragh O Grady was unceremoniously stopped in the 8th minute, resulted in a black card for the Buttevant defender and Jack converted the resultant free to equalise again. Buttevant regained the lead in the 10th minute from a free and took a two point lead with another converted free in the 12th minute. Seamus Fox, now playing in a far more advanced position, than he started the game, scored for us in the 14th minute after the ball was held in possession for a good while with clever hand passing. That was not the norm though; we were very wasteful in front of goals, and opted for some poor shot selections in occasions. There was no score in the next 10 minute period, when we owned the ball, but could not force the score. We sent frees and shots from play wide of the post, and spurned any conversions from three 45 metre metres shots that we had been awarded. Buttevant scored again in the 25th minute from their impressive and high fielded full forward, Mark Lenihan and try as hard as we could, we lacked the composure to eke out the scores, we craved. Jack O Connor did reduce the deficit to a solitary point in the 30th minute from a free but in the 4 additional minutes; we threatened but did not raise the desired white flag.

The referee, Aidan Hyland from Kilworth, who had a very accomplished game then blew the final whistle and allowed Buttevant to rejoice. Congratulations to Buttevant and especially so, to Mr. Fowley, he was our tormenter in chief, but it is still delightful to see him back playing, after his own injury woes over the last number of years.
