A trouncing at the hands of Buttevant

September 06, 2020

Buttevant inflicted a desperately heavy defeat on Killavullen, last night in Castletownroche in the final game of the Round Robin series, in the Junior A Football championship, and thus Killavullen make their exit from the competition.

It was a night when Buttevant displayed a level of intent, that Killavullen could simply not match, and we were beaten all over the field in umpteen positions, that we simply could not arrest on the night. The Buttevant team had quality forwards in Ryan Fowley, Mark Lenahan, Kevin Lenahan and Michael O Neill, and the other two forwards, and especially Gavin Carey went through a show of ball, and fed their danger men. We were out mastered in midfield as well, where Anthony O Neill and Tadgh Healy show bright for Buttevant.

Buttevant raced into an early lead and were five points ahead, before Killavullen got their opening score in the 12th minute from Paul O Sullivan, who raced up along his side of the field, and after exchanging some neat hand passes with Bobby Kennedy, Dave Brosnan and Charlie Lillis, finished with a point. The reprieve was short lived through, because Ryan Fowley, in their corner is too good a player to funk the quality of infield ball he was getting, and he scored two sublime points before the initial water break.

On the resumption, Buttevant kicked on, and effectively ended the game as a contest, even this early in the game, with two goals inside a minute from that man Fowley, and the other architect in chief of our downfall, Mark Lenahan. Charlie Lillis, got a point back from a free for us, in the 28th minute to leave the score at the break 2-11 to 0-02.

Killavullen made a valiant attempt to arrest the slide in the 3rd quarter with a number of substitutes making a difference, particularly Eoin Birchill, who was industrious and lively. In that 3rd quarter, we had points from play from Charlie Lillis, Eoin Birchill, and Paul O Sullivan again, while Buttevant tacked on a mere two points in that spell. Had Buttevant taken their foot off the gas, but if they did, their management emptied their considerable bench, and their substitutes were then anxious to impress, and drove at Killavullen again, in the final quarter.

They finished the game with a massive tally of 3-16 where as we could only add a second Charlie Lillis free to bring our final score to 0-06. It’s been a while since we took a drubbing like that, in football, and are Buttevant that impressive, or were we simply poor on the night.

Perhaps, a bit of both.

Killavullen GAA Club made an effort to stream the game live on Facebook, but the Internet quality and phone coverage, at the moment, and especially since Storm Eileen is very poor, and patchy.

Credit to John Hannon and especially Joe Howard though for spending some money, and buying the necessary hardware to try to stream the games.
