Killavullen More Than a Match for Millstreet

September 05, 2019

A very encouraging performance by all the players on the hurling panel reaped a just reward in Glantane last Wednesday as Killavullen Under 14s dominated the Championship semi-final throughout. Millstreet had stormed through their group and were favourites to progress but a steely resolve and some excellent hurling propelled Killavullen to the final.

Colm O’Mahony was majestic at full back and Barry Cotter dominated at centre back from the start. In truth the entire defence was in mean form and confined Millstreet to two early points in the first half. Rory O Regan responded with a goal and a point. Ian O’Mahony’s goal and a point from Colm Hannon gave us a two-goal lead at half-time.

The fact that we had coped well with a game Millstreet team that played with the aid of a stiff breeze gave us great confidence at the turnover. Eoin O’Hanlon and Willie Gifford were in flying form in the middle. Darragh O’Connor opened our second half account with a point and his later goal capped a fine performance at the edge of the square. Owen Magner delivered two great goals and a point and Evan Sheahan came off the bench to blast home a goal of his own. Colm Hannon added two more points while Millstreet scored a solitary point, which was a poor reflection of their honest endeavour and talent.

The final score was Killavullen 6-6 Millstreet 0-3. Killavullen await the winners of the second semi-final between Grenagh and Ballygiblin, which is guaranteed to be a formidable challenge, but they are sure to be buoyed by this performance.
