Clyda simply wanted it more – Full stop

November 27, 2022

Yesterday, Saturday, the 26th in Glantane, Clyda Rovers dished out a comprehensive defeat to a much-vaunted Killavullen team in the Semi Final of the U21 B Hurling championship winning on a score line of 1-13 to 0-11. Quite simply, right throughout the game, and despite being numerically reduced to 14 players after only 10 minutes, Clyda showed the greater appetite for the contest, and only a handful of Killavullen players, played to their potential. Joe Cagney was the exception, he believed his tender years and gave a very strong committed performance form his corner back berth.

We opened the scoring with a Jamie Magner free in the 4th minute but Clyda eroded that advantage away in the sixth minute, and then took a decisive lead that they never relinquished in the 8th minute, when they scored the only goal of the game. A long ball into our goal mouth was slipped loose by our goalkeeper, and Conor Corbert from Clyda was at hand to push the ball into the net. Clyda got another point immediately afterwards but though struggling in large areas of the middle third of the field, Seamus O Mahoney broke free from a ruck situation, and scored a nice point. Colm Looney, after switching wings, for once evaded his marker, and got another point for us, in the 11th minute.

Clyda lost a player to a straight red card, which seemed harsh on the day, but they answered that disadvantage in a telling matter by scoring the next three points, two from frees and one from open play, scored by Luke Brophy. Clyda showed great desire to bottle up the Killavullen player in possession, and to be at the end of any breaking ball, and for most of the half, and indeed the game, it would have appeared to the casual onlooker, that tit was them, that had the numerical advantage of players. Jamie got a free back for us, in the 22nd minute and added one from open play in the 25th minute, but Clyda got the last score of the half, to deservedly lead at the interval 1-06 to 0-05.

When play resumed, the anticipated increase in tempo and work rate from Killavullen was not forthcoming, and it was Clyda who scored the opening two points. Mikey O Connor was moved to a half forward berth and he became more influential and scored a nice point, but he too was finding life difficult against a highly motivated Clyda team. Jamie scored another free after Liam Fox was fouled but Clyda got two more scores back from Ben Nyhan, who typified the desire in his team. He covered an amount of ground over the hour. Jamie got another converted free, but again, Clyda got that score back. Rory O Regan was introduced for Sean Palmer. Jamie got another free that he won himself, but Clyda really did have the shackles on this player, that Killavullen are so reliant on, and thus Jamie never was allowed the space to influence the game. Credit to Clyda on that front. Clyda got another point back, again from a free and Jamie got another free. We lost a man to straight red card at this juncture, but the Clyda crowd in the good attendance cherished every block and tackle that their team made, and that buoyed up their team even more. We were very lucky not to receive another red card  as the game ebbed away but I think the referee was aware that our goose was cooked, and this a full month out from Christmas. Clyda got their final score in the 28th minute of the half, and we got one back, from Michael Cagney in the 32nd minute.

So Clyda march onto the final, next weekend against Kilworth, and Killavullen are left for some soul searching. A very average display, would be generous on the final performance, of the Killavullen team, and very disappointing, for a team that is backboned by players who have played and excelled in Junior A company. Ecuador have been receiving plaudits at the ongoing world cup in Qatar – the pundits, for the application and honesty of effort, often say such a team is easy to coach. Add Clyda Rovers U21 hurling team to that list.
