Fine tally but no over all victory
2-12 to 3-13 10th August 2009 Vs. Glenville
Despite amassing a fine overall scoring tally of 2-12, Killavullen succumbed to Glenville in Rathcormac late night on a final score of 3-13 to 2-12, in this the preliminary game of the elimination process that will ultimately see one team demoted from this grade.
Killavullen showed wholesale positional changes from the lat outing against Bantry Blues, just 1 month ago, and opening their account with a Liam Dorgan free. Liam was to kick some fine points in the opening period that boded well for our future, and Ian O Gorman landed two impressive scores to boot as well. Going forward, Killavullen were competing well, with Paul Hartnett causing no end of problems at full forward, and when early ball came in from midfield, from Colm O Connell and Donal Relihan, his ball handling prowess was causing difficulties.
However that masked gaping problems in our defence, when Glenville ran at us – we simply did not track back enough to prevent the overlap, and the inevitable goal came just before the break, when we failed to clear our lines.
We were behind by four points at the break, having scored seven, and playing well enough. Then the disaster happening, and we conceded a number of scores cheaply, misjudging the flight of the ball and getting caught in possession up the field.
Glenville without ever having to play particularly well, found them selves in a very comfortable position, and even had the luxury of a penalty that they could afford to tap over the bar.
Killavullen made numerous changes in personnel, and added some respectability to the score line with two late goals, scored by Donal Relihan, from his new berth at full forward, one a fine score from a 20 metre free, that really tested the rigging of the netting.
Brian O Driscoll loss was immense, and the prospects of our final game against Mayfield is deep in the melting pot – which ever team wants it most will win it. Let us hope that this is “The Blues”.
