Defeat was our lot in prestigious Gerard Owens blitz

September 12, 2020

On Friday evening last, in what was a lovely Autumnal evening, there was a fine game in Killavullen.

The Gerard Owens cup is one of Killavullen GAA’s most valued and cherished annual events. It is not only a reminder to us all of a remarkable and special young man but so too an opportunity for us all to celebrate the exuberance and competition of childhood sport.

It was only a few shorts weeks ago that Killavullen Under 12s narrowly got the better of Ballycastle by one point and this year’s Gerard Owens cup provided a chance for both sides to measure up against each other once again. The great thing about Under 12 competitions, is that they can be played 10 times, and you could get 10 different results, each time, and so, this game was no different.

The first half that was a very closely contested affair with two goals scored at each end. At the break only one point separated both sides with Ballycastle edging ahead.

The real turning point in the match came in the first ten minutes of the second half. An energetic Ballycastle emerged from the break and stormed ahead scoring three goals and four points that were left unanswered.

There was to be no comeback from a spirited Killavullen side as Ballycastle continued their dominance right up until the final whistle and were deserved winners.

Both sides demonstrated great sportsmanship and mutual respect throughout. The two clubs are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

Deirdre Owens was on hand the present the Gerard Owens Cup to the victorious Ballycastle Team and mentors.

The Killavullen squads were as follows;
