Minors win opening Football game
July 31, 2020
Last Wednesday night July 29th Killavullen and Ballycastle Geals got the minor div 2 round robin football championship up and running.
On a wet and dreary night in Killavullen it was Killavullen who made the brighter start with points from Mark Nagle, Colm Looney (2) and Jamie Magner, who's shot nearly rattled the net, that lead at the first water break 0-4 to 0-1. Ballycastle with a strong running game caused the Killavullens defence many problems but some excellent defending resulted in numerous turnovers when the score looked the lightly result. Further points from Seamus O Mahony and Eoin Birchill had Killavullen out in front 0-6 to 0-3 at the half time break.
As the rain came down heavy, players beginning to slip and slide and the next 15 minutes only yielded one score a piece. Both teams were struggling at this stage, with many passes going astray and the wide count staking up for both teams. After the final water break, it was Ballycastle who gained momentum and sensed they had Killavullen on the ropes. Their goal, a well worked move, was no surprise due to thier dominance since the water break levelled the game with 5 minutes to play, 0-7 to 1-4. However, it was the boys in blue and white that dug out the victory with a reply of 1-2 in the final minutes. Points from the excellent Mark Nagle, and Eoin Birchill free and a fortuitous goal from Sean Bartley, which was intended to be a point saw Killavullen grab the victory on a score line of 1-9 to 1-4 . A scrappy win, but a wins a win.
Next up, our minors revert to hurling for round 2 of the hurling championship v Shandrum on Wednesday August 5th.
