Killavullen secure Dermot Sheehan Memorial Cup

September 28, 2019

Killavullen Under 14 hurlers were honoured to accept an invitation to play our near neighbours Ballycastle Gaels for the Dermot Sheehan Memorial Cup in a very enjoyable game played in Castletownroche last Monday evening. The two teams were evenly matched and exchanged scores in the opening quarter, with Killavullen points from Ian O’Mahony, Eoin O’Hanlon and Colm Hannon. The Killavullen defence tightened their grip on their opponents and provided a good launch-pad for further points from Rory O’Regan, Colm Hannon (2). Once again Barry Cotter was proving rock solid in the centre-back berth and he pressed forward for the final point of the half to leave us four points ahead at the break.

The second half was a shorter than expected affair, with referee Justin Murphy taking the wise decision to blow up after twenty minutes due to the fading light. Ballycastle had battled gamely throughout and Killavullen were grateful to our plucky custodian Charlie Cremin and a tenacious backline of James Lyons, Colm O’Mahony and Eoghan Forde (who had replaced the equally effective Evan Sheahan). Together they thwarted a number of efforts on goal, while on the wings cousins Tomas Fennell and Dan Cronin cleared an amount of ball. At the other end Owen Magner and Eoin O’Hanlon popped over a brace of points each to more than balance three Ballycastle points. Many of the scores on the night were a result of good stickwork and team play, with Darragh O’Connor, Stephen Rea and Willie Gifford featuring prominently.

Shayne Cahill and Dara O’Neill were introduced but only got brief cameos because of the decision to blow up early. The final score was Killavullen 0-11 Ballycastle Gaels 0-6. After the game, Willie Gifford graciously accepted the Dermot Sheehan Memorial Cup on behalf of the victorious Killavullen team. Sincere thanks to the host club Ballycasle Gaels, referee Justin Murphy and the Sheehan family.
