Larkin billows the net to send us into U16 hurling final

September 02, 2019

On a lovely Autumnal evening in Glanworth earlier tonight, Killavullen advanced to the final of the Division 2 under 16 Hurling championship when they defeated Kilara Óg in the semi-final on a final score of 4-16 to 1-09

Killavullen opened the scoring quickly with three points from Jamie Magner, two of those efforts coming from place balls. Kilara got a point back before the inspiring Michael Cagney scored an impressive score from distance in the 10th minute. Jamie added a similarly impressive effort when he turned sharply after a telling clearance from defence up along the line from Cagney again. We were creating a good number of chances without finishing off the scoring and we were grateful for James in our goals for keeping out 3 efforts when the incoming forwards were right close to him. Michael Walsh scored a nice point and we stretched that lead out considerably when our captain, Conor Griffin scored a good goal in the 13th minute. Kian Lane spun away from a congested area in the middle of the field to register our 7th point in the 15th minute. The same player was on target from a 65 metre free shortly afterwards. Ronan Barry and Chris O Callaghan were dominating the exchanges at the back to thwart the Kilara forwards threats and up front, Jamie led the line but was ably assisted by the other forwards, with Seamus O Mahony and Patrick O Grady doing trojan work for the team, on their respectful wings. Jamie got two points in a row, the second from a placed ball, before Kilara scored two points in reply in the 24th and 26th minutes of the half.

Jamie got a delightful point from out of the wing before Shane Walsh never took his eye off of a high centre and finished to the net with a well-timed swing, in the manner of Ray Cummins of old, but this team is too young to know who Ray Cummins was. The score at the interval was 2-12 to 0-03

After the restart and with Jack Martin having replaced the injured Shane at the break, Jamie somehow managed to thread the ball into the net when he was right on the end line to open up a large lead. Kilara stuck to the task in gritty fashion, and got two point back but Michael Cagney sent another long range missile over the bar to cancel out one of those scores. Kilara were pressing now in determined fashion, and got 3 points back and then they added a goal. However at the other end, the introduced Oisin Larkin fairly blew the ribbings from the net when he controlled a bar that had come back off the cross bar on his hurl without catching it, and rifled it home. Conor Griffin, deputised for the withdrawn Kian Lane scored a long range free but Kilara answered that point back to bring their tally to 1-09.

However we marched to the final against Ballycastle Gaels with two further points, from Michael Walsh, and another free from Conor to bring our tally to an impressive 4-16
