First Minor win since 1994

August 29, 2019

Killavullen possibly chose the final tonight to play their best football of the year when they powered to the Division 2 Rebel Óg football final, that was played earlier in Charleville, against St. Peter’s to win out on a final score of 3-17 to 1-08.

We opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when Mark Nagle scored a delightful point and quickly went further ahead with a Colm Looney point. St. Peters replied with a score in the 7th minute but Colm, who was a real headache to the St. Peters rear guard scored two further points in the 7th and 9th minutes. Mark was fed with a lovely intelligent pass by Fionn Magner, out in front of him, and he turned sharply and scored a lovely point from distance in the 10th minute. St. Peters though were right back into the game, when they score a goal in  the 12th minute at the 3rd attempt after Patrick O Grady had made two braves saves, but was powerless to prevent the ball being forced over the line.

Both teams were pretty even now at this stage, and neither scored for the next 10 minutes or so. At the back Michael Cagney, Fionn and Podge Cronin were very tight, while behind them, Ronan Barry, Kian Lane and Conor Griffin held their opposing inside forwards in a vice like grip. Mark Nagle scored again in the 26th minute from a free to kick start the scoring again, and this was followed up by Jamie Magner scoring well in the 28th minute. Colm Looney was put in on goals in the 30th minute after Jamie robbed the full back from a quick kick out, and Colm finished low and hard to the net, for a major score. When Liam Fox caught a high ball from the resultant kick out, and was then at the end of some neat exchanges of passes to kick the ball over the bar, to open up a significant and flattering half time lead of 1-08 to 1-01, it was a significant and decisive statement from the team.

After the break, Killavullen went into a different gear when their hard working midfield pair of Brian Cotter and Mickey O Connor were the distributors of great passes to the forwards and they benefited with scores. Darragh O Grady scored in the 1st minute with Eoin Birchill scoring in the 3rd and now, in the 3rd minute of the half, all of the starting Killavullen forwards had scored and you senses it was to be our night. Darragh got our next score in the 4th minute but St. Peters replied immediately. Brian Cotter then came booming through the middle, and quick hands released him, and he remained calm and slotted home our second goal in the 6th minute to open up a sizeable lead. Jamie scored again, followed by a scoring free for our opponents, then Liam Fox in the 11th minute but St. Peters battles strongly and got a score back in the 15th minute. Mikey O Connor prevented near certain goal when he raced 30 metres to get a hand in, just when the attacker was going to shoot, but Patrick claimed afterwards, that he had it covered. Killavullen rang the changes from the bench with Ben Hunter, Colin Carey and Seamus O Mahony all introduced, but that did not lessen the momentum, and we got the next score from Eoin Birchill from a free in the 19th minute. Mikey O Connor kicked a fine point from distance in the 20th minute. Cian O Connor, was also introduced, and was pivotal in setting up Darragh for another goal in the 22nd minute. St. Peters tried hard and got two points back before Brian Cotter scored a scintillating point that typified the team ethic on the night. He gathered the ball under pressure in his own half ball line, worked it up the field with others along the edge of the field, and curled it delightfully inside the post for a memorable score. Eoin Birchill got another pointed free after Seamus O Mahony had been fouled to round off our scoring, but true to their heritage, St. Peters kept battling, and got two points back to leave the score at the end, 3-17 to 1-08

The cup was presented by fellow Killavullen man, Kieran Linehan, who is now domiciled in Newmarket, of behalf of the Rebel Óg board to the Killavullen captain Fionn Magner who gave a fine speech, thanked those who needed to be thanked and praised the club for supporting the team very well on the night.
