U16 Match ends in a draw

August 26, 2019

Killavullen and Clyda Rovers played out a very entertaining game, in the latest instalment of the ultra-competitive U16 Division 1 Football championship, played earlier tonight in Killavullen.

Clyda were quick off the mark and scored two very early points before Kian Lane scored a point for us, in the 3rd minute Michael Walsh then equalised for us, after a neat exchange of passes. We went ahead in the 10th minute from a Jamie Magner free and the same player pushed us two points ahead with another converted free. Clyda replied with two frees of their own, to leave the teams level after 16 minutes. We went in front again, after Seamus O Mahony was fouled in the process of shooting, and Jamie converted. Clyda then had a period of dominance,   and scored 3 points in a row to lead 0-07 to 0-05. We clawed a point back from a long range free, converted by Michael Walsh, but Clyda got a fine point from play to bring their tally to 0-08. Just on the stroke of half time, we scored another free, courtesy of Michael Walsh again, to leave the bare minimum between the teams 0-08 to 0-07 in favour of Clyda.

In the second half, the game was equally as tight and Killavullen were in the ascendancy for the first 20 minutes or so. Ronan Barry equalised with a lovely point from distance, before Jamie put us a point in front, from another free. Ronan pushed our lead out to 2 points and then, with 10 minutes to go, Jamie converted a free to push 3 between the teams. We worked a goal chance, but the Clyda keeper bravely came off his line and smothered the attempted shot. This rallied Clyda, and they went up the field, and earned a free which they converted to bring the margin back to a point. They brought the deficit back to a single point with a point from play, and earned a hard fought draw with a point in the 5th minute of injury time.

A draw was good enough for Clyda to advance in the championship, but Killavullen will have to play out the remainder of the U16 championship, in the plate competition, rather than the cup.
