Cotter goal propels us to Junior A hurling Semi Final

July 27, 2019

A brilliant goal from Eddie Cotter midway through the opening half was the catalyst to drive Killavullen into a Junior A Hurling semi-final, at the expense of Doneraile, in the latest installment of the Avondhu Junior A Hurling championship, played earlier tonight in Kildorrery.

Doneraile had the opening score of the game, in the very 1st minutes and had their 2nd point from a free in the 3rd. Liam Cronin, so often our scorer in chief now, got our opening score from play in the 6th minute and got an equalizer for us, from a free in the 8th minute. Doneraile was finding some space in and around midfield at this stage, and that was the routes that led to their 3rd point in the 9th minute. They went further ahead in the 14th, after a needlessly conceded free was converted. Liam Cronin again got a point back for us, from a free in the 15th minute after Charlie Lillis had been fouled. Eoghan Buckley worked hard in another attack, and Eddie Cotter raced free from a ruck situation, and used his pace to evade his pursuers, and placed a delightful shot beyond the reach of the Doneraile Goalkeeper, to register our first goal, in the 17th minute.

That goal was instrumental in improved play from Killavullen, and when a diagonal ball was fed by Pa Sheahan to Barry Murphy, he tacked over the next point in the 19th minute.  Our full back line pair of Kevin Fox, and Fionn Magner blocked an in-rushing Doneraile player and from the resultant clearance, Eddie tacked over another score in the 20th minute. Doneraile reduced the deficit to a goal with a pointed free in the 22nd minute. Paul O Sullivan who had a good game, and had behaved himself impeccably at his sister’s wedding the day before got a lovely point in the 22nd that those closest to the team really appreciated, his sacrifices.  Liam converted another free in the 23rd minute to open up a 5 point lead 1-07 to 0-05 . Doneraile got another pointed free in the 24th minute  but Barry Murphy cancelled out that score with a point from a free in  the 26th minute,  The score at the break was 1-08 to 0-06.

Doneraile tried hard at the start of the second half, and got another conversion from a free in the 1st minute. Jack O Connor turned sharply at the other end, and garnished a point for us to keep the cushion of five points intact. For the next few minutes neither side scored with good play from Eoghan Buckley and Billy Norris instrumental. A long delivery from the impressive Charlie Lillis evaded Barry and the full back but Jack O Connor had followed the flight and flicked it past the out-rushing goal keeper. Doneraile responded with a converted 65, after Pa Sheahan and Michael Cronin had pushed aside a Doneraile effort that threatened our goal. Padraig Looney, quite until that period, scored a point from the touchline to kick start his scoring in the 9th minute of the half. Doneraile responded again with another converted free, only for Jack to retaliate with a delightful point. Padraig, perhaps sensing that his berth on the team could be in jeopardy scored 3 rapid fire points in a row, between  the 12th and 14th minutes to bring our tally to 2-14 , as against 0-09 for Doneraile. Barry stretched out that lead further in the 15th minute from a free that Doneraile cancelled out in the 16th minute. They were next to score , another point in the 20th minute but could not get in for the goal that they craved.

The introduced Mikey O Connor, may have been hard done, not to start, and to prove his point, he sent an audacious point over the bar in the 22nd minute. Eddie Cotter scored again in the 24th minute, Doneraile eked one back, and the scoring was concluded by Liam Cronin from another free in the 30th minute.

On the night, Killavullen were full value for the win, and now await the winners of Clyda Rovers and Ballygiblin in the semi-final.
