Minor team advance to the knock out stages

July 11, 2019

Killavullen had too much firepower and overcame a plucky and game Keale Gaels team, earlier tonight in the 2nd round of the Minor B Grade championship hurling. We opened the score with a lovely point from an acute angle by Mark Nagle and quickly added two further points by Colm Looney and Mark again, who was very effective in the corner position and was given a great supply of quality ball from the hard working Cian O Connor. Keale Gaels got a point back, only for Mikey O Connor to swing over a difficult point from a free, in a deflection off the post. Mark got his 3rd point and then, Darragh O Grady was left isolated in front of the goals, and he made no mistake to open up a commanding lead. That lead was stretched out substantially more, when Cian caught a delightful delivery from Brian Cotter, you never have guessed that they were good friends, Cian sent Mark clear of his pursuers with a clever pass, driven into the ground, and in space, and with time, Mark finished expertly to the net. Keale got two points back, and then Darragh scored another point, only for Keale to stage a mini revival with 3 unanswered points of their own. Darragh got another point, before Keale got the last score of the first half, from a free to leave us leading at the break, 2-08 to 0-07

After the break for half time, Colm Looney got a fine individual goal with a clever finish to the net, and then Noah, got his just deserts for hard endeavours with a goal of his own, after some earlier efforts had been denied. Mikey got a converted free for us, before Keale again reeled off a succession of scores, 5 to be precise to have the score at 4-09 to 0-013.

Killavullen made some adjustments on the line to bring a renewed vigour to proceedings, and Mark Nagle scored a fine point, after been set up by Ronan Barry and Colm Looney exchanging passes quickly. Darragh got another point, before Mark rounded off his fine nights work with another gaol, and his cue to exit the proceedings. Colm got another point, then a Mikey free before Kian Lane tacked over another point. Keale tried to stay in the game with another score, but we finished with another point from Michael Walsh to bring our tally to 5-15 as against 0-14 for Keale Gaels, for whom Daniel Hartnett, son of John, our junior trainer was prominent throughout for.

The team management would have been pleased with the application on the night, when a few players were away on holidays, but Conor Griffin, and Brian Cotter were excellent in defence and our half forward line particularly hard working, to enable others to do the scoring.
