U21's shine as they dispatch Buttevant

July 08, 2019

Killavullen advanced to the 2nd round of this year’s U21 Hurling championship, B Grade at the expense of Buttevant last night on a final score of 3-17 to 0-06 but the game was tighter than that margin suggests, just that Killavullen were more clinical in the forward divisions, while our new look back line was really impressive, with Michael Fresh and Fionn Magner excelling in unorthodox positions.

We opened with a free from Mikey O Connor in the 2nd minute but Buttevant responded with a score in kind, in the 4th minute and took the lead for the only time in the 7th minute. Mikey equalised with a long range point from play, before Liam Fox caught a high centre, and duly dispatched it over the bar, simple game really. Mikey got our next point from a free in the 12th minute and Padraig Looney, who again impressed, scored in the 13th minute. Eddie Cotter was part of a new look half back line, which shone on the night, and he clipped over a lovely score, from distance in the 14th minute to bring our tally to six points. Buttevant got a point back from a free but Colm Looney found space to score in the 19th minute, and then, the decisive score of the first half occurred in the 20th minute when a Jack O Connor shot found the net, high up in the corner, beyond the reaches of the Buttevant keeper. Mikey scored again in the 27th and 30th minutes and the final score, before the break, was obtained by Buttevant to leave the score at the interval, 1-09 to 0-04.

After the restart, Jack O Connor scored another point before an excellent centre from Sean Woulfe found him in space and he drilled the ball to the net superbly. Paul O’Sullivan clipped over a long range point in the 10th minute before Buttevant got a point back in the 14th.  Jack was next to score again, when he fired another goal to the net, to earn his hat trick in the 15th minute. Killavullen rang out a number of changes but the substitutes did not weaken the team

Padraig Looney scored another point in the 16th minute, and then Mikey fired over another free, before Paul O Sullivan got this second point from midfield. Buttevant scored another free but Paul cancelled out that score with another long range effort, Mikey tacked over another, and then, Sean Browne scored a point from an acute angle to finish our scoring at 3-17.  Buttevant tried hard to the end, but the Killavullen defence were in a mean mood, and when two shots got through the packed defence near the end of the game, Padraig in goals dealt with them coolly and dispatched the sliotar out the field again.
