Killavullen Comprehensively Avenge Last Years Spanking At The Hands Of The Same Opposition

2-10 to 0-07 27th April 2019 Vs. Ballyhooley

On Saturday night last, Killavullen avenged their defeat at the hands of the same opposition when they comprehensively beat Ballyhooley, in the opening round of this year’s Junior A Football championship, on a final score of 2-10 to 0-07. The real damage was done in the opening half in this game, when Killavullen, playing with the wind, went in at the short whistle, leading on a score of 2-08 to 0-03

Killavullen had the first score of the game from Padraig Looney in the 2nd minute but Ballyhooley were quick to respond in the 4th minute from a close in free. Ballyhooley took the lead in the 6th minute from another free before Padraig, whose pace and directness was causing Ballyhooley no end of problems equalised in the 8th minute. We took the lead, which we subsequently never relinquished in the 10th minute from a nice point from Kevin Fox, and that man Looney scored a real beauty in the 11th minute to open up a two point lead. That lead was stretched out further when Liam Cronin converted a free that Gary Lane had earned. Gary had to be temporarily withdrawn, to be replaced by Mike Fresh. Killavullen were awarded a penalty when Charlie Lillis was unceremoniously taken down and he bearing down on goal in the 15th minute. The Ballyhooley full back was shown a black card by the excellent referee, Aidan Hyland from Kilworth but it could have easily been a red. Charlie needed lengthy treatment but Billy Norris held his cool, and dispatched the penalty to the net emphatically. Killavullen with Eoin Buckley and Sean O Regan working very hard in the middle of the field enjoyed a lot of possession of the ball, and that enabled further scores to come, Liam Cronin scoring our next score from play, in the 23rd minute before the same player got our next score from a free in the in the 28th minute. The patched up Gary Lane was reintroduced into the fray for the injured Charlie Lillis at this stage. Mike Fresh used his pace to get away from his man, but was subsequently fouled in the 32nd minute and Liam converted before the game ended as a contest after Padraig Looney received a ball well out on the wing, turned his man, and bore down on goal in the 35th minute. His bullet like drive was past the goalkeeper before he even had a chance to move to leave us leading at the interval 2-08 to 0-03, Ballyhooley getting a point right before the break from their hard working full forward.

On the change over, and now playing with the aid of the wind, Ballyhooley scored in the 1st minute of the half from play and scored again in the 4th minute of the half to bring their tally to 0-05. Ballyhooley despite having a lot of possession at this stage, never got a shot on goal due to excellent work from our rear guard, in which Billy Norris was imperious, and Pa Sheahan and Ian O Gorman impenetrable. We were very dangerous in the counter attacks and but for wayward shooting with the final pass, would have been in on goals, one on one with the keeper on several occasions. Liam Cronin did register a point for us, from a free in the 10th minute. We garnished another point in the 11th minute from the boot of Kevin Fox to bring our tally to 2-10. David Brosnan was sprung from the bench to replace an ailing Gary Lane and Dave proved to be a good outlet for a lot of clearances from the defence after his introduction. Ballyhooley tried hard but got only a point from a free in the 20th minute to eke into the lead. Both teams were reduced to 14 players after an off the ball incident was spotted by the referee, but another Killavullen player stepped into the affray, and rightly got himself a red card also. No quibble from either side with the decision. Ballyhooley got their final score of the game in the 23rd minute but Killavullen avenged the spanking that they got last year, when the score was 1-14 to 0-08 in favour of Ballyhooley this time round, by a margin of 9 points, 2-10 to 0-07.
