History of Killavullen Juvenile GAA Club
Killavullen youngster's had played with a myriad of clubs in North Cork, and formed teams of their own at stages with some degree of success prior to the intervention of a group of local stalwarts, which included the legendary Johnny Beechinor Senior.
The new Juvenile Club was formally adapted in 1978 by the North Cork Board following exhaustive meetings attended by Tim Nagle & Michael Linehan (Ballygriffin).
The first lineout came in the year of 1979, a year coincidentally that the Pope came to Ireland, so perhaps two auspicious occasions came to fruition on the same year!
The Juvenile Club, as formally founded, did not have to wait too long to make an intermediate impact as in 1980, the new formed club annexed the North Cork Under B Football championship, defeating Glanworth in Doneraile by nine points to eight. The team was guided by the previously mentioned Johnny Beechinor with assistance from, amongst others, Micheal Linehan, Tim Nagle, Eoin O'Neill and Norma Walsh.
The Club, benefited through the 1980's with a plethora of championship won in North Cork, as this team came of age, and were succeeded by others following suit.
A particularity strong bunch of players came along in 1990 that succeeded in winning different age groups and grades as they got older, and this culminated in Brian O' Driscoll from the club, represented Cork in both Minor hurling and Football codes in 1994. Indeed Brian was unfortunate to play for Cork on a losing All Ireland Hurling Team that year. He did though win the Irish Independent award for the highest goalscorer in the country for 1994.
Much of the credit for the skill set of the players must be credited to the teachers in Killavullen and Ballygown national schools, particularly Christy Clancy, from St. Catherines, who was domiciled in Killavullen at the time. This team was to graduate to bring the club, right up from the novice football ranks that the club was playing, to their present Premier Football Intermediate standard in 2007.
Right through the 1990's, the club has succeeded in winning North Cork Championships, and have got close on a number of occasions in the county competitions. Finally in 1994, the club achieved a notable success when it did succeed in winning the Cork County Minor B Grade Hurling Championship.
Through the years the club has been very well served by a number of officers, right up to the club occupant of the Chairman's desk, John Magnier. Mary Dorgan serves as juvenile secretary for a large numbers of successful years.
This includes amongst others: Eoin O Neill, George Lane, Sean Nagle, Mattie Dorgan, Billy Feore, Pat Egan, Pat O'Regan, Tim Nagle & Tim O' Callaghan who was teaching in Rahan National School
Currently, the club is experiencing a sense of a revival of fortunes at under age level, boosted by the tremendous work being carried out by the present Committee, Mentors & parents.
The under age structure of the club has been boosted recently by the large numbers of girls that partake in the games, and these girls have proved more than equal to the boys at their respective age groups. Jenny Luddy, Catherine Coakley, Patrica Murphy, amongst others, have gone out to represent Cork in the under age Ladies Football, so may be in time, the facet will be added to the club as well.
The club is grateful to the principals, Carmel Nagle and John Hannon in the two national schools in the parish, for promoting their games, and allowing outside trainers to come in and build up the skill set of the players.
Recently, due to declining numbers and a population shift, the club has been forced to amalgamate with Ballyhooley, at Minor and Under 16 level, as Black water Rovers, and this has been a tremendous success with the players playing a high calibre of competitions, and winning occasionally, both at North Cork and county levels.
To all those not mentioned here, who may have helped with pride to put the village of Killavullen on the GAA map over the years, we salute & thank you.
Long may our successes continue.

Blackwater Rovers
Blackwater Rovers minor club was formed in 2001 as an amalgamation of Killavullen and Ballyhooly minor clubs, due to shortage of player numbers in both clubs. The amalgamation has been a tremendous success as it has provided a good standard of hurling and football for our young players and also many titles have been won. In 2005 the amalgamation was extended to U-16 level. This has provided good continuity as the players are now playing together over a longer period.

Juvenile Secretaries Report to AGM 2007
A Chairde,
It is my privilege on this my sixth year of office to present the secretary's report for the past season of Killavullen Juvenile GAA. 2007 as in previous years has been very busy both on and off the pitch.
U6 & U8
This is to be one of the most enthusiastic groups within the club. Not a training session goes by without at least 30 to 35 turning up in all kinds of weather each Saturday morning. Because of the large numbers the group was split into U6 & U8 age groups. Throughout the year the U8's travelled to other clubs for challenge matches in both hurling and football. The very young age of some players was brought up at a few meeting during the year and maybe this could be changed in the coming year.
U10
This year we again took part in the Avondhu ground hurling competitions and played some thrilling matches. Having entered 1 team at the beginning of the year we tried to enter a second team because of our large numbers, but were too late with our request. This team also played lots of challenge matches at home and away.
U12 & U11
The U12 footballers had a great year winning the football league final. This is a young team who have shown great courage and determination throughout the past year. They played some fantastic games of hurling and football during the season and were unlucky not to have brought home more silverware. They lost one of their star players Emma Marie Nagle when she fractured her knee during the final. Thankfully she is now fully recovered and wearing the blue and white again.
Our U11 hurlers lost out by 1 point in the final against Ballyclough.
U14 & U13
This year while having some very strong players we could have done with 1 or 2 more players on the age. We were depended on some of our younger players to field teams. Saying that we got to the semi final in the football, but came up against a very strong Glanworth side. We also had the misfortune of being drawn with Glanworth in the Hurling with similar results.
Our U13 had some good games but went out of the competition when they came up against a much stronger Mallow 2nd team.
U16 & U15 (Blackwater Rovers)
Our partnership with Ballyhooly at U16 level has proved to be successful over the past 2 years as both clubs would be unable to field a team otherwise. With this in mind it was decided at the beginning of 2007 to join at U15 level also. This was agreed by the Avondhu Bord but unfortunately there were no U15 competitions held this year. The U16's had success in the “B” grade football league competition beating Charleville in the final replay. While they won no silver wear in hurling they played some exciting and controversial games. We wish all the players who how leave the juvenile club and move up to the minors every success in the coming years. Attending training sessions is vital if we are to continue at this high standard and win competitions.
EVENTS HELD DURING THE YEAR
Fundraising
- A table quiz was held in the Haven Bar
- Annual raffle for the Easter egg sponsored by the Haven bar
- Church gate collection
- Draw for All-Ireland Football final tickets
Social
In February the club held a disco in the Hall and Certificates were presented to the 2006 U10 hurlers. To celebrate the 2007 success of the U12 and U14 teams we hosted a very enjoyable social in November in the Arches, Mallow. Cork hurler Sean Og O hAlpine spoke of the importance of sport in young people's lives today and told everyone to have respect for others as well as yourself. Sean then presented certificates and medals to our U10, U12 and U14 hurling and football teams. Presentations were also made to Dan and Margaret Collins. Dan has been a long serving member of Avondhu Juvenile for and richly deserved this award. Sean Og stood for lots of photos and signed the many jerseys that were brought in hand bags etc. 140 adults and juveniles enjoy a lovely meal followed by a lively disco which saw many adults on the dance floor all night.
Summer Camp
In July 108 boys and girls attended the summer camp. This year the camp was again held in conjunction with the GAA Cul Camps. Coaches this year were John Hannon, Tim O'Neill, Noel Crowley & Kevin O'Callaghan from the Co Bord, Sean Lane, Reena Buckley, Laura Harrington, Jamie O'Sullivan, Jonathon Owens, Stephen Rice, Darren O'Driscoll, Denis Collins and Niamh O'Regan. They all worked hard over the 5 days and hopefully all attending enjoyed themselves while gaining skills in both hurling and football.
ANNUAL BLITZES
Gerard Owens
This year in conjunction with the Killavullen N.S. centenary celebrations the Gerard Owens memorial competition took place. This was held during the August weekend. Our U8 and U10 players opened proceeding with some brilliant exhibition games of hurling. Afterwards each player then received a specially created medal which Carmel Nagle principal of the school presented. The main blitz with teams from Ballyclough, Ballyhooly, Granard Gaels and ourselves took part. After some trilling matches Killavullen and Granard Gaels contested the final. During a tense nail biting (and much shouting from the sideline) Killavullen emerged victorious for the second year in a row. Fr Dan Gould presented specially designed to all who took part on the day.
Eugene Whealan
The annual football challenge between Killavullen and Ballyhooly took place in October. Both teams were short some vital players. The first half was evenly contested. However Ballyhooly ran out easy winners towards the end of full time. Michael Whealan presented both teams with medals after the game.
Trips away
In May some of our younger players travelled to Thurlus for the Munster hurling final Cork V Clare. For some this was their first time attending a big match and they savoured every moment of it. In August the U14-U16 group travelled to Dublin for the semi final and returned home victorious over Waterford and having stopped in Portlaois for dinner. As in previous years everyone going on these trips is always well behaved and a credit to their families and their club.
TEAM JERSEYS
The club has been extremely lucky to have been presented with 3 sets of jerseys. Jerry O'Sullivan of Crafted Fitted Furniture sponsored the U16 Blackwater Rovers team with a complete set of jerseys, shorts and socks.
Pat Cronin of Cronin's Garage Lavally sponsored the clubs first ever set of U10 jerseys.
Rory Lankford sponsored a set for the U8 team.
Previously the U10's and U8's wore bibs or jerseys so big they tripped over in them.
Congratulations
- To Liam Cronin and Eoin Sheehan who both played in the Cork Primary games.
- To Jamie O'Sullivan who was part of the Cork U14 football winning Munster team.
- To Jonathon Maunsell who was on the Avondhu U15 panel.
- To Sean O'Regan who played on the Avondhu U16 football team which won the new Frank Halbert Cup beating Carberry in the final. He was also on the Cork Co U16 football team which won the Munster title.
- To all our lady footballers who play for Mourneabbey L. F. They have won many titles again this year including U12, U14 & U16 Co finals. Brid O'Sullivan was on the Cork U14 team and Niamh O'Regan was part of the Cork U16 All Ireland winning team. Brid, Niamh & Sinead Coakley were also on the All Ireland Intermediate winning panel.
- To the camogie players who play for Mallow. They had tremendous success again this year from U11 up to U16. Well done to all.
- To the Minors, U21's, the JB hurlers for their contribution to our national games throughout the year.
- To our intermediate footballers who did themselves and the parish of Killavullen and Annakissa proud on their journey to the Co final. They were unlucky not to win against near neighbours Mallow. I have no doubt they will be back in force in 2008 and we will be decorating in the blue and white again.
- We wish Ballygown N.S. all the best as they go forward to the semi finals in 7 catorgies in Scor Na paisti.
Thanks
A special word of thanks must go to the following people
- All the management and coaches: John Magner, Kevin O'Regan, Kevin Rice, Ciaran Maunsell, Jerry O'Sullivan, Dan O'Sullivan, John Mannix, Kieran Scully, Willie Fox, Redmond Lane, Kevin Lillis, Petra Roche, Tony Buckley, Tim O'Neill, Bernard Cotter, Finny Magner, Jim Palmer and Des Bartley. There are also a number of eager juvenile players who help out each week and the Club is very grateful to them.
- To all the referees including John Stafford, Noel Brosnan, Rory Lankford, John Magner, Kevin O'Regan and Sean O'Regan.
- To John Hannon for his help again at this years summer camp.
- The school secretaries Julia and Laura for all their help.
- Michael Rea of Adagrafic for all the banners and church gate posters.
- Norma Walsh for promoting our fixtures throughout the year.
- Rita in the Haven for donating the Easter egg for our raffle.
- Noel Brosnan for his donations to our Club.
- To everyone who helped with the various catering events during the year. There are still some plates and trays around if you are missing them.
- Shreelawn oil for their generous sponsorship.
Acknowledgements
- The Club wishes to acknowledge both schools in Killavullen parish and also Rahan N.S. for showing great interest in all GAA activities.
- To everyone who helped get the pitch ready for the many juvenile games held during the year.
- To Paddy Hartnett and Pa Donoghue who always have the pitch in tip top condition.
- To Jerome Coakley our GPC member, who travelled to Doneraile every fortnight on our behalf.
Misc.
- We wish Fr O'Keeffe well in his new parish and the club welcomes Fr Hegarty to Killavullen. We hope he has many enjoyable years in our parish.
- I would like to point out that the majority of teams involved in Avondhu Juvenile GAA have boys only on their teams. We in Killavullen are a small club and are not in that position. We rely on our girls to enable us to put out teams even though this sometimes puts extra pressure on the player as well as their parents as a lot of our girls play ladies football and camogie with other clubs.
- Concern was raised during the year about our standard of hurling with every age group. Something will have to be done to raise our game. The club may have to go done the route of bringing in a hurling coach. This is something to be looked at in early 2008.
- The club has booked the new Mallow GAA complex for training beginning in January for the U10 & U12 groups.
- New club jackets were got during the year. They are available in juvenile and adult sizes. The cost is euro;25 for juvenile sizes and euro;40 for adults. All profits made on the sale of adults jackets goes to the juvenile club. There is no profit on the juvenile jackets as they are sold at cost price.
- This year as well as texting members and sending notes through the schools 2 newsletters were also issued with updates on what was going on in the club.
Condolences
The Club extends its deepest sympathies to all members of the club and their families who suffered a family bereavement during the year.
In closing I would like to thank the chairman John Magner for his continuous support shown to the Juvenile Club. It has been a pleasure to work with you John. To Caroline Maunsell our treasurer who is able to account for every cent. To all my fellow officers of the Club thank you for your support during the year and thanks to the parents for their continued support towards Killavullen Juvenile GAA Club.
